Blackham Update (April 2008)

Just a note from the Blackhams - looks like it’s been a while since I wrote last. Here’s our update for April ...

Things have been a little stressful with the downturn in the housing market. The good news is that we did get a decent offer on the spec house we own, so barring anything happening, the house should be sold mid-May, and that will be a big relief. We had started considering putting our house up for sale (seeing if it would be more marketable) but are happy to be staying here (although the master closet in the new house did have some strong appeal). The possibility of selling this house did get some stuff done that needed to be done (painting, cleaning, etc.).

Our peach tree is full of pink blossoms, with pink tulips poking out too. I love the flowers of spring. Spent some time planting pansies and getting the flower beds weeded. Gray tilled our garden and we got the lawn thatched and aerated. The kids love playing outside... basketball, tetherball and playing in the hose when it is warm enough (which is basically anything above 60 degrees!). They used sidewalk chalk to create an entire city all over the driveway (Blackham Park, Landon Lake, McDonalds, etc.), riding their scooters all through the various roads they drew. Colton has a little three-wheeled scooter he has been playing on too.

Landon and Callahan have been busy with basketball, a practice and a game each week. The kids were just off-track for two weeks, and enjoyed bowling twice a week. This was Landon’s last “off-track” time as he’ll be finishing up elementary school this year.

It is derby season. Gray has run several derbies so far and has several more scheduled. I try to accompany him when I can, and Callahan comes and helps out too. Gray and Callahan have been working on building cars too, making Callahan’s and helping other kids too. Gray is hosting a workshop for the scouts here in the neighborhood.

While we were visiting Wendy’s family in St. George, one of our goldfish died. Our neighbors had been “tending” the fish for us, and they felt bad, and went out and bought another (much bigger!) fish ... which promptly died as well. The sole survivor looked lonely, so we released him back into Grandpa’s pond. We did refill our bowl with a new fishy, a beta ... Landon calls him “Lil Ute” as he is a pretty red color.

It’s been an important month for Cooper, he’s had some growing up to do. First, he lost his blankey. He carried it with him wherever we went, and I thought maybe it had been left at the grocery store (I did call and check the lost and found with no luck). It did turn up finally, but Gray quickly made it disappear again. Cooper has missed it, but it hasn’t been too bad. It has been nice not dragging it everywhere. Without having his “augy” he hasn’t taken any naps during the day, but that makes him to sleepy at night he has been able to fall asleep without it. With that milestone down, we also initiated potty training, and that’s been going pretty good. I was hoping he might just figure it out overnight (as Landon and Keaton did) but it has been rather slow going.

Cooper’s preschool took a field trip to Wheeler Farm on Tuesday. Colton and I went along. We saw cousin Katie there with her youngest and his class.

Just recently Colton has discovered doors. He walks around the house and closes each and every one. Then ... he discovered the locks on doors. And he walked around the house and locked each and every one. Then, he discovered keys ... and can now unlock the doors. He has a little set of keys he carries around with him all the time now. When he says “Kiki” we aren’t sure if he is talking about one of his brothers (it’s Keaton’s nickname, but Colton uses it for all the older boys) or if it is “key-key”. Other doors he loves are the automatic ones at stores, he loves to walk up to them alone and set off the sensor.

So anyway, that’s what we’ve been up to.
