West Coast Westra Update 3/27/18

Hey family!

It's been a few weeks since our last update and a lot has happened.

  • Hawaii Trip: Shane and I had a great time on our trip to Maui! The weather was delightful and the island was beautiful. We went on a helicopter tour to see part of the island from above, which was very cool. We were also able to see whales both then and on our whale watching excursion a few days later. The whole trip was fabulous and Janika did a great job keeping things running back at our house.
  • Shane's Trip to Europe: Shane headed out for a business trip to Amsterdam (or "Hamsterdam" if you ask Calder) just a couple days after we got back from Hawaii. He spent the bulk of his time working with the teams in the Amsterdam and Rotterdam offices of Bynder, but also had a day trip to the Barcelona office. It was pretty chilly, but he did make it out to a few museums on the weekends that he was there. He returned on Saturday afternoon and we are all so glad to have him back home!
  • Palate Expander Removed: Adria had her palate expander removed at her last orthodontist appointment and boy was she excited! She just has her braces now, so she feels like she has a whole lot more room in her mouth.
  • Loose Teeth: Calder lost his first tooth about a month or so ago and is very close to loosing his second tooth...hopefully today (thought he has some idea that the dentist will pull it out at his cleaning tomorrow.)
  • Flat Tires: Our Toyota Highlander has had 2 flat tires in the past week! One was a slow leak that I noticed while Shane was gone. I got it fixed last Tuesday. Then on Sunday when Adria and I were headed to the car she asked "Is that a flat tire?" Sure enough, a different tire was completely flat! Shane and the other kids had already left in the other car, but came right back to help us change the tire when we called. So Monday morning I was back at the tire store, where they fixed the flat...there was a razor blade in the tire.
  • Stake Youth Talent Show: Saturday evening was our Stake Youth Talent Show. Adria and Rella both participated. They played a song together on their instruments (Here Comes the Sun) and then later in the program Adria performed in a lip sync group with several other Beehives. One of the acts was a couple of YM from our ward performing some dance moves...nothing choreographed, just some fun dance moves and tricks they can do. They invited all the kids to come up on the stage with them to dance, so Calder and Rella went up. Calder completely (and literally) stole the show with his dance moves. I attached the video below...my friend sent it to me as Shane and I were both so much in shock that neither of us got our phone out in time to film the whole thing! Calder takes over just after the 1 minute mark. I attach a video of the girls' number, too.
  • Spring Break Coming Up: The kids have Spring Break in a couple weeks. We don't have anything major planned yet, but part of the week will be spent getting ready for our...
  • Foreign Exchange Student: We have a student from France coming to stay with us for 2 weeks! This is an opportunity through the middle school since Adria is studying French. We initially thought that we would automatically be hosting a girl, but the only two girls coming in the group for our school were assigned to 8th grade girls (they got to choose first). The French teacher gave us the option of backing out, but after some thought we decided to go ahead and host anyway. So in about 3 weeks, we will have a 15 year old "son" named Noah. He'll shadow Adria at school and learn about how families in the US live. We'll show him around San Francisco, Target, and Costco, too. He shares a lot of interests with our family, so we think he'll fit right in.
  • I'm sure there's a lot of stuff I am missing, but it's time to go get Calder and I want to make sure I get this sent out. Videos from the talent show are below! Have a good day!

Shane, Alicia, Adria, Rella, and Calder

Mom wrote: Alicia, thanks for the nice update and the two videos. That is fun how Calder participated and did his moves! We are glad Shane is safely home with his family. An Exchange student for two weeks--good for you! Thanks for the other weekly letters from the rest of you.
I was pretty tired last night, so didn't get on the computer to see the mail that came in the afternoon and evening. The cleaners came yesterday and Derek left work downtown for awhile and came to our home to help move furniture and empty out rooms for the carpet cleaners, who also came.
So after all those cleaning crews left, I just mostly vegged out in front of the TV, doing a little more cleaning putting stuff away here and there. We did a little yard work to get out of the way of the cleaning crews--the sunshine felt so good! Looks like it will be a beautiful conference weekend in the 60's.
We enjoyed an evening out with my siblings Fri. night at Archibalds, then games at our house afterwards. Merrill and Lorrie are also going to St. George this weekend. We enjoyed a nice dinner out on Sat. with Jen & Gray at Texas Roadhouse. Even going early at 5 p.m., it was packed. Thank goodness Gray did "call ahead" seating or we would had to wait an hour! The dinner was extra good and my steak very tender! We are trying to get ready to leave for St. George in the morning.
Chris and Kim, I didn't know Courtney was going to go to the U. Seth still going to attend the Y, guess. Aaron's 18th birthday on the 30th, right? 2 high school graduates this year: Jared and Aaron. Am I missing anybody---they grow up so fast!
Jared will be receiving his mission call any day--maybe while we are there!
love, Mom/Grandma
