West Coast Westra Update 5/27/2018

We hope you are all having a great long weekend. We've had a busy one, so we're especially glad for the extra day off. It's been a while since we've written...actually more than a month! Yikes! I was thinking it had only been a couple weeks! We'll do bullet points to make this readable, and I apologize for anything that may be a repeat.

  • Foreign Exchange Student: We really enjoyed having Noah stay with us for a couple weeks! We took him into the city, over to the coast, and to Muir Woods. During the week, he went with the girls to school and attended class with Adria. He seemed to enjoy his visit, especially anything involving basketball or music!
  • U2 Concert: Our friends Nikki and Lilly Gaskin came to visit and to go to the U2 concert in San Jose with us on the 7th. They flew in the Saturday before and we had a few days to play, which was really fun. Lilly has been Adria's best friend since 2nd grade and we are so glad that they've been able to keep their friendship going. The concert was fantastic and Adria loved it! It was fun to take her to her first big concert. The hardest part is always taking friends back to the airport...at least Adria and Lilly have some summer fun to look forward to soon. Lilly will be coming here for Girls Camp.
  • Winchester House: Shane and the girls went to the Winchester House in San Jose yesterday...this is a famous old house built by Sarah Winchester, the widow of the man who owned the rifle company. She believed that she was being haunted by the ghosts of everyone who had been killed by a Winchester rifle and that the only way to keep the ghosts away was to build a house...as long as construction lasted, she would be safe. So she had construction going 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on that house. Shane and the girls had wanted to go for a while, so this was Adria's birthday gift to Shane.
  • New Mountain Bike: Shane has been wanting to upgrade his mountain bike for a while and was finally able to purchase a new, full suspension bike last week. He's passing his old bike on to Adria and they are heading out on their first mountain bike ride together tomorrow morning.
  • Moving Pros: There have been a bunch of moves in and out of our ward lately, so Shane has been busy coordinating moving help. He has also been there to help out and has taken Adria with him to all of the recent moves. She likes to help organize the truck and has been a big help...one of our friends joked that Shane and Adria could start a moving business.
  • Elementary School Open House: The kids and I attended the open house at the elementary school on Thursday. Calder was so excited for the girls to see his classroom and the baby chick that his class hatched. The girls looked around his classroom, then ran off to visit their old teachers and find their friends. It always seems a little funny that there are all these groups of middle schoolers roaming the elementary school campus!
  • Track and Field: Adria decided to try out track team this spring and really enjoyed it. She had practice twice a week...once for the 400 m and 800 m, and once for the high jump. She didn't feel like she was especially good at any of the events, but enjoyed the experience. She participated in one meet every week, including the sectionals and finals. She's looking forward to trying cross country in the fall.
  • Escape Room: For several months I have wanted to put together an escape room for the Beehives and Deacons for a combined activity...we finally had the activity on the 16th. I essentially transformed two connecting classrooms at the church into an escape room. They had to solve 4 or 5 puzzles to get out of the 1st room and then just one or two to get out of the 2nd room. They ended up solving the case in about 25 minutes (I did give them a few hints). The kids had a good time and I was glad to have it over with!
  • School Play: Both the girls wanted to go see the middle school play with friends, so we made a girls night of it. Adria was going with a big group of friends, but Rella was just taking one friend, so I took Adria, Rella, and Rella's friend Megan out to dinner beforehand. The play was quite well done for a middle school production. It was Shrek Jr. All the lead parts were played by girls...I guess not many 8th grade boys were that interested? We ended up giving our neighbor girls a ride home, too, and stopped at Menchie's for FroYo. Calder and Shane had a boys' night hanging stuff up in the garage (they also went to Menchie's, just much earlier than the rest of us!)
  • Upcoming events: We're going kayaking at the lagoon tomorrow with some friends...it's supposed to be a warm day, so it should be perfect! Calder has his kindergarten play this week and Shane and Calder will be heading to the Fathers and Sons campout on Friday. Shane and I are going to a housewarming luau (at his old bosses' new house in Los Altos Hills) on Saturday. Then Shane is headed back to Europe for a week and a half on Sunday. The kids finish up school on the 13th and Shane will get home that evening. Whew!

If you made it to the end of this, you deserve a nap. Have a Happy Memorial Day!
Love, Alicia, Shane, Adria, Rella, & Calder
