Messages from Mom - February 2022

(Thursday) Feb 3, 2022

Sad news about your second cousins. Nelva got a phone call last night while we were there, telling her about it. https://kutv.com/news/local/hawaii-crash-claims-lives-of-utah-couple-parents-of-four

My cousin Ed Howell, used to live in Nelva's ward (and his 2 sisters, Jan and Cherie still do)---they are all 3 Berthell Howell's children in Alpine. The couple killed is Ed's oldest son, Jason Howell, and his
wife. Jason was a physician in Heber and his wife was an attorney and I think a law professor at BYU. They leave 4 children.

Nelva said she thought 3 of the kids were ages 11, 13, and 16, but didn't know the age of the 4th child. One article gave Jason's age as 44 and his wife's age as 45 (just Shane's age).

A Hawaiian woman was driving a car that crossed over the median and his Jason's rental car head on.

So sad to even lose one parent, but to lose both at once would be devastating.

We just found that our land line phones are not working and we can't figure out why. Maybe need new batteries, but we can't get them open to check. We don't know how long they have not been working. The message on the little phone window says check tel line. So you'll have to call our cell phone.
  • Grayson: And here I thought land line phones were against the law.
  • Alicia: Gray, it’s Margie and LaMar’s rebellious streak showing through.
  • Grayson: Good point. But here's the question - will there be a "land line" phone in the new residence in Highland? You might need to check to confirm they even have the infrastructure. Just trying to help.
  • Wendy: We still have a land line too! Jenna doesn't have a cell phone and needs a way to call and receive calls from all her friends! Hope you figure out the problem!
  • Jen: A battery issue wouldn't affect ALL the phones at once would it? Is your phone service still through US West? That's the last "landline" phone provider I recall having ... Will the "272-2448" number be ending with the move?
  • Shane: I'd like the 801-272-2448 number to live on...we can switch it to be a cell number, or to a VOIP line that forwards to Mom's cell.
  • Wendy: Yes!! It is amazing how many years that number has been in the family!!
No, there won't be a land-line in the new house so we will have to get used to just our cell phone. I just seem to be able to hear conversations better on the portable phones (our set has 5) and it is nice to have one in the office and bedroom and everywhere close.

So far we have just shared a cell phone, and since possession is nine-tenths of the law (or something like that), it is usually with me. And Dad is fine with that and doesn't use it much. But we will need to get him one too and he will need to learn to use it better. We are on Derek's family plan currently, costing $70 or so for our one iphone.

We started on Scott's family plan, til they needed the 5 phone limit for their kids as they got older. Then we were on Chris's family play, til they needed all 5. We figured Derek's crew wouldn't be old enough for awhile.

Old habits die hard with us older folks. Like I love TV and with our antennae in the attic, I get plenty of free shows that I like---especially once we bought the TV in the family room on the main floor. Then the number of stations I get increased dramatically. Derek ordered a small new antennae device awhile ago from amazon, but when he installed it, the number of stations we get free, dropped to just a few,
so he returned it. I know none of you get regular TV. But I am really used to all my stations.

Then we got Jeni's old TIVO quite a few years ago and I really love that and am used to it. As Tivo upgraded to a new more expensive service (pay a lot for the console and then pay a monthly fee), they offered a deal on their old tivos----pay a one-time $100 and no monthly fee-------for as long as the old tivo lasted. I figured it would pay for itself in 6 months, and it has lasted for many years and is still going strong. I never watch TV in real time. I just have TV set to record all my news, and favorite shows and then I choose to watch what I want when I want and just fast-forward through commercials. It records two stations at once (I wish it were 3) and records up to a certain number of hours (it is quite high, but I wish it were even higher before it gets filled up). I don't know if anything better is out there that would do the same or better, that I could master, and didn't cost a lot.

Watching my shows is something I really enjoy, so need to get a similar or same set-up in the new house. We do have netflix, apple TV, and Prime also. I don't know how to get my news shows without reg. tv and I do watch a lot of them. I like to be in my recliner, not sitting at the computer to watch shows or on a little phone screen.

I know you young ones use the phone for everything, but we still prefer our computers with 2 monitors, and a big TV screen. And we want the Wii to still work for the grandkids when they visit. So we are glad to have our techy kids who can hook all those things up for us!!

We plan on getting a new framed TV, that looks like a picture of family or art, to go above our new fireplace. That way we can enjoy our family pictures, since we won't have the wall space for them in the new house.

We are open to considering new ideas and knowledge that you have.

Gray, are you having fun with your new Tesla!! Though do you still have to take your truck to work? Are you going to keep Jen's vehicle or sell it? Force her to become comfortable with the Tesla. That's when I quit driving---when we got our lst Lexus and I wasn't used to it, and LaMar was always around to drive, so I didn't learn. I feel very uncomfortable backing and parking and judging distances when doing those things. I was hoping they would get self-driving cars by the time Dad couldn't drive any more.

Our RS president called us the other day to see if we were all right. She'd seen an ambulance heading to our neighborhood and thought of us. It was for Joe Cramer (Shane & Alicia used to tend for them) who had had quadruple by-pass heart surgery and was worried something wasn't right (he's a doctor himself)----but he is fine.

Wendy, we hope you got your new furnace yesterday and weren't too cold until then. Hope Jaiden is better for her upcoming play this week. Taylee is doing great in Italy.

We got a call from the phone company checking to see if our phone was restored (we hadn't reported it), saying the construction on Vine street had been the problem. They must have called every person personally who was affected.

A new couple spoke in Church yesterday, that just moved in on Shenandoah. They have moved dozens of times since their marriage, while raising 6 kids, youngest is almost 17. They lived in Mexico, Brazil,
Japan, and in many states! How hard that would be! They have a married child in Pleasant Grove, one at BYU. ** Just wanted to pass on a hint she said she learned from a friend while in Japan. She said it is helpful to color-code your calendar, using a different color for each child's schedule.

Dad just found lots of family mail in Spam. So if we didn't answer one of your emails.............................

Alicia, Chris said he got a check for $177 mailed to him, after just filling out a short form, after you forwarded the "missing money" website. I saw several of Scott's family and sent it to them. I hadn't seen Chris's (he said he had already claimed it maybe). That's great that he got that. Todd Westra was on and Taylor Westra is Todd's niece that used to be in Kadan's single's ward in Provo.

We are going to dinner at Derek and Danielle's tonight, so will try to go early and visit the new house. We haven't been down that way for a few weeks.

It is supposed to be 62 degrees on Wed.! I have Spring fever!
