Blackham Update (June 2009)

Two email updates this month ...

June 17, 2009

Little Blackham Bites from the last week or so ...

  • Scooting Along: Keaton got a new scooter with his recent award money. A neighbor had a similar one to this and I found one online within our price range. It’s a bit of a mix between a bike and a scooter.
  • Plaid Shorts: Landon had outgrown most of his shorts from last year. I picked him up several pairs of the popular plaid shorts, and he looks SO cute! I grabbed one on a whim for Callahan, and now Callahan has started wearing them too. It’s so different to see him in something other than sport shorts and t-shirts. Gray has a couple pair too!
  • Tooth Fairy Troubles: The dang tooth fairy! She is SO unreliable. Keaton pulled a tooth out the other day and wouldn’t you know, no money in the morning. Silly tooth fairy, I checked MY room and there it was under MY pillow. I guess she got goofed up.
  • A Ball Bowling: The Blackham’s are bowlers ... which is to say we LIKE bowling, not that we’re good at it. The boys always attend a clinic there when they are off-track, and with summer here, Allstar Lanes has a card that offers a free game daily per kid (shoe rental for $1.50, additional games just $1.50).  As Callahan and Keaton were the only ones who got to go bowling during the off-track times, we don’t feel TOO guilty for going bowling (we’ve gone twice so far) now with Landon and the two little ones during the day. Anticipating that we will probably continue to go several times during the summer, I even bought a pair of bowling shoes for myself (they were just $20).

Bumps, bruises and barfing ... that’s pretty much what’s been going on at the Blackham household.

We saw both sides of the family over Father’s Day weekend. That’s kindof when it all started. Grayson had taken a tumble during a racquetball game (not with me, we usually don’t get quite that competitive *Ü*) and had fallen very hard on his right hip. It was bothering him (especially sleeping, as he likes to sleep on his side) but it wasn’t until Saturday night (after we got home from camping) that he could actually feel a large lump. It went down during the night, but by Sunday evening, while we were at the bbq at Scott’s house, it had swelled up again and was causing him quite a bit of pain. We dropped him at the instacare on the way home, and I went back and picked him up after dropping the boys off at home. The doctor said it was bursitis. Gray was told it should go away if he took it easy for a week or so, or there was also a steriod prescription he could try. Gray decided just to try the natural approach and took a break from workout out. He in turn cut down on calories and still ended up losing weight that week. He’s also been enjoying baths ... which helped ease the pain and also gave him a little bit of relaxation time.

Callahan and Keaton are currently in their last week of school (out Thursday). They have been riding their bikes to school, which I should like, right? They are getting exercise, it saves me a trip having to pick them up .... but I have to admit I stress about it! It’s such a busy street (7800, right across from Super Walmart and Jordan Landing). Of course they have been fine. But both did suffer bike accidents right in front of the house. Keaton first, just crashed, he has a pretty nasty bruise on his right thigh and a few other scrapes. Callahan ... not to be outdone, tried flipping a wheelie (on the grass at least) and totally turfed it, but the worst part was the bike handlebar slamming into his right thigh. It bruised immediately, and swelled up into a tight little ball. I have to admit I haven’t heard my guy ever cry in pain like he did then (and for about 20 minutes). He couldn’t walk, I had to carry him into the house (as I had carried Keaton the day before ... these boys better not get much bigger!) He finally got the pain under control and fell asleep. Unfortunately, he missed our family (we did have a babysitter for the two little ones) trip to Desert Star to see “James Blond” which I think he really would have enjoyed. The references to the Jazz, the Real soccer team and athlete’s foot would have been right up his alley. He did go play basketball the next day, although you could tell the injury was hampering his movement, and of course, he did get knocked to the ground, right on that area, more than once and had to come out of the game. He’s still limping around, and while the swelling went down pretty quickly, the bruising just keeps getting worse and worse as each day goes by. It is really quite impressive!

Then Landon ... just passed out while down in his room. Unfortunately from a standing position, and slammed his head/ear against the chest of drawers. This isn’t the first time it’s happened either. Several months ago he came home from school with rug burns above and below his eye and that’s what he said happened there too (from his seat he hit the floor ... but was in the back of the class and no one even noticed!) I have to admit I had some doubts with the first incident, wondering if perhaps he’d been in a scuffle, but the other morning I know there was no bully down in his room. Landon says that he just stretches and blam .... he’s out, but comes right to immediately. I’ve had my share of passing out moments during my pregnancies, but I always had 5-10 seconds realizing it was coming, almost always in time to get myself laying down which would ward it off. So I’ve told Landon NO MORE STRETCHING unless he’s laying in bed and we’ll keep a close eye on him.

Cooper got sick last night and had several sessions throwing up, poor kid. He slept all through the night though, and seems ok today. I did have to change all the bedding in his room though ... that is a workout! Wrestling a queen mattress by yourself. Three loads of laundry!

Landon’s been out of school for a bit now. It’s been nice having him around, as I’ve been able to run to a store or something, having a built in babysitter. I did sign him up for a golf clinic at a nearby course. An hour each morning for a week, learning the basics of the game. He enjoyed that so much that I went ahead and put him in a golf camp, which is four hours a day. Landon has enjoyed that, but says he needs new clubs (he’s outgrown the set Gray bought him a while back). Unfortunately, being our only lefty, the equipment is something we can’t pass down to the other boys. Today he took Gray’s clubs (as well as a couple of his own) and tried his hand at golfing right-handed and he said it went pretty well.

I think we’ll keep busy this summer. The local bowling alley offers a “summer safe pass” which is one free game of bowling per person per day (before 6:00pm). Shoes are at a reduced rate of $1.50 and additional games are just $1.50.  I’ve gone with Landon and the little ones several times already this summer, and once with the whole clan. It’s a fun, and fairly inexpensive outing.  I also signed up the older the boys for tennis lessons (seeing if anyone of them could become a partner for me), and Keaton is going to try a soccer clinic next week (he wants to play in the fall). Callahan is NOT going to continue on with soccer (after much back and forth) but will probably still workout with the team now and then. He’s pretty happy with the year-round basketball and it keeps him busy enough. There is a basketball clinic coming up, but the three older boys have already gone to it. I might actually put Cooper in (they have a kindergarten session) just to give him a push and a new experience (and I’d get to jog the track, so it would be a getaway for me too). Hopefully we’ll fit one session of swimming lessons in, and Keaton (our monkey) is interested in a rock climbing camp I told him about (we’ll see if that happens).

Callahan’s class did a little fourth grade Olympics. Each kid could choose four of the numerous events to compete in. Callahan took first place in the long run, freethrow and jumprope. He got 4th in the 50 yard dash, but he had to compete in that after his injury. Both boys had field trips today, Keaton to Kennecott, and Callahan to Maceys Grocery Store and Mountain Mikes Pizza.

I guess there is nothing of note from me or Colton .... except Colton got a new car (I couldn’t resist after I saw how much he loved the wiggle car at Scott and Amy’s house).

So that’s our update. Field day is Thursday. Gray isn’t in charge of it this year, but they did ask him to come do the rockets again, and are using most of the supplies (water balloon fillers, slingshot, etc.) It’s the Parade of Homes, so that is creating some longer hours for Gray. He has to work late Friday and all day Saturday (the 4th) so that is a big bummer for us.

Hope you all have a happy holiday!
Jen and da boys
