Blackham Update (September 2012)

Chris is so good at getting weekly messages off. I was thinking I’d get off a MONTHY update, but it hasn’t been happening. I have been keeping my blog up to date though, so if you haven’t checked it recently, it tells all about our summer, scouts, sports and misc. memories.

We just finished up birthday week ... lots of cake, and I did end up having a birthday party for the boys. Of course that was the one weekend the temp dropped and severe thunderstorms were forecast.  I like getting back into the routine of school. This year my schedule is much more open! With Landon being able to drive, I don’t have to pick him (or Callahan) up in the afternoon, and that saves me a solid hour each day. Colton is now in school all day too, kindergarten getting out at mid-day kept me pretty homebound last year.  I am not getting a WHOLE lot more done, but I have been making it out to Mom’s each week (we go out to lunch) and I’ve been getting in some tennis with Dad.  I wasn’t sure we were going to get Landon road ready (that blog post is still to come). I didn’t know what we would do, as I can’t drive both him and Callahan to school in the morning (they start at the same time, but 20minutes apart). Luckily, a car dropped into our lap (Clay and Courtney were getting a new van, as they added a third child to their family). The only problem was the car was a stick. Landon was quite reluctant to learn, but he mastered it pretty quickly. We got it inspected, registered, parking permit for school, AND Landon’s license with just days to spare.

Callahan and Keaton both tried out for, and made the “A” (best) team for their grades at Copper Hills High school. They will be playing with this team for Fall and Winter. It’s a good program to get to know the high school coaches, the team plays, and they get practice time at the high school too. Keaton is on a team with a third cousin (Zach Norman ... Mom and his grandpa are first cousins). But it doesn’t start for a couple of weeks still, Callahan is going stir crazy not having games for so long (it’s been several weeks).

As a belated birthday for the boys, we got a TRAMPOLINE. We’d resisted the boys requests for years, but getting rid of the swingset, we have a perfect spot for it (to be inground) ... although right now it’s just in the back on the grass, as the area in back need a LOT of prep (it’s a lovely weed patch at the moment). Grayson wasn’t really very excited about getting a tramp. He warned me that it would almost certainly end up in an ER visit ... we hadn’t even had it two hours. It wasn’t our kid (it was the neighbors) and it wasn’t the tramp, it was the trailer we had brought it home it.  I do try to supervise ... there are kids playing at our house constantly (even if MY kids aren’t out, our yard is the one being used). I was watching the big boys in the back on the tramp (Callahan had some friends over) when I glanced in the front and saw a bunch of kids playing in the trailer (Colton & company). I thought “that’s an accident waiting to happen” and went out immediately to tell them to stop. I was just seconds/steps away ... all the kids but one were in the trailer. Somehow they had lifted the gate up (it’s HEAVY, like 50 pounds of metal). I don’t know if they couldn’t hold it up, or if someone pushed it, but it came crashing down, on our little neighbor boy. His leg was trapped, I lifted the gate enough to pull his leg out, then I saw his head ... there was a gash, about three inches long and ½ inch deep, bleed profusely. I had Colton run ahead and knock on the neighbor’s door as I carried Bradley over. Luckily both Mom and Dad were home and they rushed him to the instacare. 12 staples in his head and instructions to watch for a concussion.  There must have been 8 or so little kids in the trailer ... I’ve never seen a group disappear so fast! I do think it was a little traumatic for everyone. Colton seemed very subdued for the rest of the night. He said “When Bradley’s head got cut open, I got shocked” ... I think he meant he was IN shock, he must have heard that somewhere.  It could have been worse (if it had hit him in the face, if the parents hadn’t been home, if I wasn’t right there). Little Bradley was there are church today and they said he’s got the ok to play in the soccer game on Saturday.

Well, there’s a little note to get you up to date. I hope to get some more blog entries up soon (I’ve got several running through my head, I just need the time to get them down). I have discovered reading again! I’ve downloaded the Kindle app on my Ipod (and Gray bought the Kindle Fire), I had no idea there was SO much free stuff available ... and the library has e-books to borrow too. I’ve been going through a lot lately!  Jen and da boys
