Chris and Kim Update (15 Sept 2020)

Waterfalls galore - Springs, Fun vacation - Christopher and Kim Update
Westra Family and Friends (Sep 15, 2020)
More Pics of the trip next week! - I could not fit them all.

Thanks Wendy for your letter, glad the girls had such a great time at homecoming. Most of this will be about our little vacation on the weekend. Other news: Camden went camping for a couple nights with his friend Mitch. We had another fire near Battle Creek Canyon and some people on the other side of the canyon had to be evacuated for safety. Krystal and Courtney did the Lotoja (Logan to Jackson) bike race on Saturday with their Dad. One of the medical providers at Kim’s work specifically requested Kim as her medical assistant. The supervisor was going to match Molly up with someone else, but Molly said, “No, I want Kim - she is dependable”. Today is the anniversary of Kim’s baptism 41 years ago. Aaron went to the Salt Flats with his cousin Annika.

We left on our trip Friday right after Cayson got back from school, and drove all the way up to Buhl, Idaho. It is pronounced “‘b-you-l.” Our main recreation Destiination was thousand Springs State Park, which consists of five different areas. About 30 minutes before we arrived at our Airbnb apartment, we stopped at Shoshone Falls, which was beautiful. It was right outside of Twin Falls.

Saturday morning we all got up early, and Cayson and I went down to the Snake River to explore and check out rocks. We didn’t get many rocks, but we did pick up lots of trash.

Then we all went to the Malad Gorge and saw some points of interest and went on a walkway over the huge gorge. Cayson was really excited to get to the box Canyon Springs section of the thousand springs park. So we headed there and was on the hike along the rim. I believe it’s the 11th largest spring in the world and the second largest in the United States. See the pictures below. Here is a description.

Just a few hundred feet away from the dry, grassy rim of the canyon, wide green leaves and , ivy-wrapped rock walls mark the outskirts of a phenomenal oasis. Here, 180,000 gallons of water per minute pour into the Snake River. Lush green water plants sway beneath the current of a 20-foot waterfall, shaded by large trees.

Cayson went swimming under the waterfall, the waterfall was so beautiful! It was a bit steep getting down from the edge to the river.

Then in the afternoon we went to Niagara springs, and you can see some pictures below. The view was gorgeous. It was a little disappointing in that there was no real place to hike.

Saturday evening we had a nice dinner and played a game of rummy cube. Kim found some of her vintage Apple dishes at an antique store, and the lady at the thrift store told us about a balanced rock about 15 minutes out of town. So we went there Sunday morning.

So we got up early Sunday morning and headed out there to watch the sunrise by the balanced rock. It was the most extreme balance rock I have ever seen! Check out the pictures below. My mom was not even sure that it was real. Cayson took some good pictures of me right by the rock. My pictures of him by the rock were not quite from the best angle.

We were initially planning on coming home Sunday, but Kim learned that her friend Lyn Parkinson passed away, and the funeral was up in Idaho the day after we would be there. So we extended our vacation for one more night. We stopped by craters of the moon national monument and preserve for a good hike. That evening Kim and I went to the viewing and she visited with the family members that she knew. Cayson and I got up early Monday morning and went out to explore and collect some rocks. Then we went to the graveside service in Pocatello before heading home.
