Jensen Update (January 23, 2017)

Jensen Update Mon, Jan 23, 2017, 9:09 PM

This week it has been raining practically ALL WEEK. I am so sick of the rain!! Josh painted his pinewood derby car. The Derby is next week on the 31st and he is so excited! They are doing it at the Veteran's home so that the Veterans can watch the boys do their races, so that should be interesting!

Jaiden said that she wanted to get up early at 5:45 to start reading her scriptures in the morning. Usually I have to drag her out of bed in the morning and so I was very surprised (and impressed)! I had been wanting to set a goal like that too and so I told her I would do it with her if she woke me up. I wondered if she would follow through, and she did! She woke me up at 5:45! It has been a week now and she has gotten up (and gotten me up) everyday at 5:45 (except weekends -- those are our sleep in days). The first day we just read from the Book of Mormon, but then I suggested we start doing Personal Progress in the mornings. I have been wanting to do Personal Progress with the girls for the past few months now but never seem to get around to it, and this has been the perfect opportunity!

Many of the goals include reading various scriptures for a particular value and discussing the readings and then writing what they learned in their journal. Personal Progress is now online and so the girls can type right in their online journals on their LDS.org account. Janelle was called on Wednesday to give a talk on Sunday on one of the personal progress values, so I decided it would be a good idea to have her join us in the mornings too. So now I have Jaiden on the kitchen computer and Janelle on my laptop and we read and discuss the scriptures together and then they type in their online journal. They have already been able to pass off a few requirements and set goals toward one of their ten hour projects. Janelle decided to do cooking for her "knowledge" project and so I taught her how to make home-made yogurt on Saturday. She has set a goal to plan and cook dinner once a week (which I just learned is actually a requirement for good works) so we may have to adjust her project. She has already been cooking dinner once a week fairly regularly, but we will try and plan ahead more and try some new recipes. We started watching the new Netflix series of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" after Alicia mentioned it in her letter last week. It is well done and we have been enjoying it! (The kids have read some of the books). Although it is totally weird to have a kids' show where the good characters keep getting murdered! (And where the bad guy keeps getting away.) But of course that is what makes it a series of unfortunate events!

Wednesday 18: I had a primary presidency meeting and Rick had interpreting appointments after work. I ran Jaiden to the store to buy material for her FACS class. Last week Janelle went on a special field trip for students with no absences and tardies for that quarter.

Josh has set the goal to earn an award at the end of the school year for no absences or tardies the whole year and so far he is still on track. I told him that is a good goal -- but not completely in his control, because there may be a day where he is sick and can't go. Thursday he woke up with a stomach ache and was feeling dizzy but still insisted on going to both choir and school. I gave him some medicine which seemed to help. It worked out this time and he felt better later, but I told him if he had been throwing up or something, then he wouldn't be able to go to school! Perhaps his mental attitude is helping to keep him healthy though! Josh had a cook out for Scouts. It was cool out but luckily it wasn't raining.

We finally got Jase's Christmas calendar! It is like the family calendar we get for Christmas except with one or two pictures of him in poses that match the various months. It was sure nice of that member family to do that for the missionaries! I texted them to say thank you and to say how much we liked it! I also asked if she could send me some of the digital copies of the pictures so that I could have them for his blog.

It was busy interpreting this week as usual. Rick has been spending lots of time looking online for cars for Janika. She only has $3000.00 in the bank and that won't buy a very good car and so we

will probably have her pay half and we will pay half and then have her make payments to us until it is paid off. We finally had a car all picked out and had taken it to a mechanic to have it checked out. The owner was one of Rick's former students. But there was a problem with the front bumper from a fender bender that I wanted fixed before we bought it. They agreed to the repairs, but later on someone offered them the full amount without getting it fixed and so we weren't able to get it. So that was disappointing. There are two cars that looked good in Centerville (if they are still there), but we don't want to drive clear up there to check them out -- especially in this weather. There are also two in Las Vegas that look decent, but it is such a nuisance to waste a whole day driving to Vegas and back -- especially if we don't end up liking the cars.

Jenna went to Anna Ence's birthday party and Jaiden went to Lainee Leavitt's birthday party. I picked up my new glasses at Costco. I am still trying to get used to them. Saturday I ended up working on Primary stuff pretty much of the day. Jared had Junior Prom with Paige Dewey and had a great time! For their day date they had purchased canvases and paint brushes and each couple did a painting together. He said it actually turned out really well and that they had a lot of fun. He said they had a huge group. They had a nice dinner at one of the boys' houses. Jared said that his mom had decorated it really nice and fixed a really nice dinner. All of the couples pitched in some money towards it. Here are a couple of pictures from Jared's phone (of course he had to get one with him acting cool with girls fawning over him, ha ha!)
I guess there is some unwritten rule that the girls should wait until one dance is over to start asking boys to the next dance (preference). So Jared was asked the next day. Apparently there were a few girls who wanted to ask him. He had on very good authority that this girl he really likes was going to ask him, but then another girl beat her to it. He is friends with the one who asked him and said that she is a fun, awesome, popular girl. But he had also been looking forward to going with the other girl that he really likes. But he said he will just ask her to Senior Ball instead. We told him that he can also just ask her out. Our boys are good about going to the dances, but they don't date much outside of that!

Janika has been dating a lot -- some she likes and wants to go out with again and some she doesn't want to go out with again and is therefore stressed because she doesn't want to keep accepting dates and wasting their time and money if she isn't interested. Oh, the woes of dating life! I guess there is a Snow College Crushes facebook page where people can anonymously post about their crushes. Check out these cheesy posts about Janika, ha ha!

She had a sledding date on Wednesday. I always get nervous over sledding -- too many potential accidents. But all went well and she likes the guy she went with. Friday she went out with my former Snow College roommate's son -- they played games at his apartment.

On Saturday a guy named Taylor (our Young Women's son), who is at USU, drove clear down from Logan to take her out. He stayed over at relative's house somewhere (an hour away I think) Friday night and then picked her up in Ephraim and then drove back to Provo where they doubled with his cousin (newlyweds) for part of the time. They had a whirlwind day of bowling, ice-skating, lunch, and games. Then he brought her back to Ephraim that night. She is also going to be his date at his brother's wedding in St. George on Saturday. She is still looking for a ride. She was hoping to have a car by then to drive back but it isn't looking likely at this point unless we drive to Vegas on Saturday. Janika was able to get a job as a teacher's aid for a professor and all of the work (grading papers and so forth) is done online and so she can choose her own hours -- so that is nice!

Sunday I had ward council and choir. The choir sang in sacrament meeting and Janelle gave her talk along with the rest of the Miamaid presidency. She did well. She also taught the lesson in our class and said it went well. She had an object lesson, video, class participation, and handouts. I also taught sharing time today and we had teacher council. Rick fixed a nice dinner of Chinese food. Tonight was our Priesthood Preview, and that went really well and then we skyped Janika. So I didn't get my letter out yesterday with so much going on.

Today it rained -- again. I subbed for a class and the kids all had an early out day. Well, I had better head to bed! Wendy
