Chris and Kim ~ Capitol Reef - Cabin - Kadan to Tetons

Mon, Jul 13, 7:07

Hi All. Thursday night we went over to Seth and Aspen’s new apartment in Springville for dinner. Kim brought brussels sprouts and Aspen served pesto pasta which was really good. Then we walked their little dog Major to a park. We found out Monday that Seth and Aspen were moving and Cayson and I went over Tuesday morning to help Aspen clean and move.

Friday Kim worked Half a day and then we headed down to Loa and Capitol Reef. Corin came and worked a few hours for me and then took Cayson to stay with him and Kylie for the weekend since Camden has been diagnosed with the coronavirus and is in quarantine. His symptoms are mild so far.

Our Airbnb was a quaint little cabin over 100 years old. See the pictures below. It was very relaxing. We brought our own food for most of the trip. Monte, the host, lives next-door and met us in the yard and showed us the place and told us about many of the knickknacks.

Saturday morning we drove through the park to a rock collecting site on the other side. There were three locations described in the book Rockhounding Utah And one of them we couldn’t find, one was moderate, and one was very nice in the number and kind of rocks available. I was mainly looking for agate and jasper that I can use in my pathway. See picture below for the pathway progress.

We were planning on spending the rest of the day in Capitol reef but it was so extremely hot we had to alter our plans. We did go in the visitor center for a bit with our masks on. We bought a book on capitol reef that we looked at that night. We did go on a hike near Biknell after it had cooled down some, and then we picked up Kim a Curry Pizza and had that in our Airbnb.

Sunday morning we did FaceTime with Integrity, and they are leaving on a trip today to New Orleans. We told her we missed seeing her on Saturday as usual.

Earlier that morning we went on a sunrise hike on the outskirts of Loa. After we packed up and headed home, we did stop up the Nephi Canyon at a rock collecting place for 45 minutes. I parked Kim in the shade and she read and journaled while I went out and collected some rocks.

I had Cayson write up a few sentences about his weekend with Corin and Kylie. See below.

From Cayson
This weekend with Corin I picked and processed a lot of plums. We made a lot of fruit leather in his dehydrator. I have been interested in dehydrating food and I might end up buying one. We also made a couple of rocket stoves. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQdea3z8c3g). It was really fun and we got 2 cups of water boiling in about 10 minutes.

End of Cayson’s report

Have a super week! Aaron has found a girl he likes. Corin got a commission to create some bowls for a lady, from trees in her yard. See pic below.

P.S. Here is an update from Kadan and Christine below.

Hey there Family,

It's been a minute, so I'll catch you all up really quick.

We are still working on projects as we have free time, but the to-do list continues to grow regardless. Accomplish one item and cross it off, and then promptly add two more items. Seems to be going that way pretty consistently. I don't really expect it to change any time soon.

We have made a little progress on our 72-hour kits and food storage, but still need a lot of stuff. Just holding off on purchasing the more expensive things for now. We were originally looking into buying those special Gamma Seal lid/buckets off Amazon, but we found a better way to do it. You can get black buckets at Walmart for just a few bucks, and then The Home Depot has the Gamma Seal Lids for $8 each. That makes your total per bucket somewhere around $11 instead of $18. We bought 5 to start ourselves off. We already need more, but don't want to end up with too many to store right now.

A few weeks ago we did our trip to Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort, which was really fun. I'd always wanted to explore that area, so it was cool to go. We also hiked a few miles into the Narrows, which was another thing I've wanted to do. We really enjoyed the trip, and were glad that everyone was able to get together for it.

Just today we got home from a vacation to the Tetons with Christine's family (including aunts and uncles and cousins). They rented a big cabin just outside of Driggs, Idaho for 4 nights. There was an annex cabin for the teenagers, which was really nice, because they could stay up late without bothering everyone else. The cabin had plenty of nice features, the best of which being the fantastic view of the Grand Teton. Our view was opposite what most people see, because they view from the Jackson, WY side. We did drive to Jackson one of the days. We did a couple hikes, both of which were awesome. It was a really nice trip.

Tomorrow, the Fastenal District Manager is coming to our branch, and we are starting a big project switching around our front counter and reorganizing inventory in the entire store to save space and help customers faster. It's going to be quite the project. We'll see how it goes. I'm working extra hours this week to help.

Anyway, we hope everyone is enjoying Summer and still getting out despite Covid.
Have a great week!
Kadan and Christine
